Thione Seck

1955–2021

Über Thione Seck

Born into a Dakar griot family, Thione Seck spent the 1970s in Orchestra Baobab and Star Band before founding Raam Daan in 1984 and building one of mbalax's most distinctive solo voices. His 2005 album Orientation, recorded with Indian musicians and a 70-piece string ensemble, opened mbalax to South Asian melody and remains a benchmark for the genre's ambition. He died in Dakar in 2021, leaving his sons Wally and Pape Diouf to carry the family's mbalax line forward.
