Über Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky

Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky was born in Votkinsk in the Russian Empire in 1840 and was among the first graduates of the St Petersburg Conservatory. He taught at the Moscow Conservatory before a stipend from his patron Nadezhda von Meck let him compose full time. His ballets Swan Lake, The Sleeping Beauty and The Nutcracker remain the core of the classical ballet repertoire. His Piano Concerto No. 1, the 1812 Overture and his last three symphonies made him the first Russian composer with a lasting international following. He died in St Petersburg in 1893.
