Über Igor Stravinsky

Igor Stravinsky was born in Oranienbaum near St Petersburg in 1882 and studied composition privately with Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov. Three ballets written for Sergei Diaghilev's Ballets Russes in Paris, The Firebird in 1910, Petrushka in 1911 and The Rite of Spring in 1913, made his name. The Rite of Spring's jagged rhythms and dissonance caused a disturbance at its premiere and changed the course of 20th-century music. He lived in Switzerland and France from the 1910s, moved to the United States in 1939 and became an American citizen in 1945. He died in New York in 1971.
