Sara Tavares was a Lisbon-born singer-songwriter of Cape Verdean descent who became one of the warmest voices in Lusophone music. Blending Kriolu song, soul, folk, and gentle Afro-pop, her 2005 album Balancê brought her international acclaim and a sound she called simply her own. Admired for her sunlit melodies and quiet resilience through years of illness, she died in 2023, mourned across Portugal and Cape Verde.
