Oliver Dragojević is the voice of Dalmatia and arguably the most beloved singer Croatia has produced. Raised in Vela Luka on the island of Korčula, he fused klapa harmony, chanson, and jazz phrasing into festival pop, most famously in a decades-long partnership with songwriter Zdenko Runjić. Songs like Cesarica and Skalinada became national standards that every Croatian generation sings from memory. When he died in 2018, boats escorted his coffin across the Adriatic and tens of thousands lined the waterfront to say goodbye.
