Mumiy Troll was founded in Vladivostok in 1983 by singer and songwriter Ilya Lagutenko, but its breakthrough came after the band reformed in the mid 1990s. The debut album Morskaya, recorded in London and released in 1997, became the best selling Russian album of that year on the strength of Utekay and Vladivostok 2000. Lagutenko's playful wordplay and glam rock swagger created a new template for Russian rock in the late 1990s. The band represented Russia at Eurovision in 2001 and has kept releasing albums, including Posle zla in 2020.
