Mashina Vremeni was formed by Andrei Makarevich and school friends in Moscow in 1969 and is widely described as the first Soviet rock band. For its first decade it played mostly unofficially, spreading through concerts and tape copies before gaining official status at the turn of the 1980s. Povorot led the Moskovsky Komsomolets hit parade for seven straight months around 1979 and 1980. The band kept recording after the Soviet era, from Odnazhdy mir prognyotsya pod nas in 1997 to the album V metre in 2020. In 2022 Russian authorities listed Makarevich as a foreign agent.
