Über Juan Gabriel
Juan Gabriel, born Alberto Aguilera in Michoacán and raised in Ciudad Juárez, became Mexico's most-recorded songwriter of the second half of the 20th century. He wrote more than 1,500 songs and sold over 150 million records, moving between ballad, ranchera, mariachi, and pop with a freedom that made his catalogue inescapable for almost every Mexican singer who followed. His 1990 Bellas Artes concert with the National Symphony, captured on the album En el Palacio de Bellas Artes, is one of the defining live records in Latin music. He collapsed on stage in 2016 days before a sold-out tour finale.
