In Flames are a Gothenburg band who helped invent melodic death metal, the so-called Gothenburg sound that shaped a generation of heavy music. Their late-90s albums paired aggressive riffing with soaring melodic leads, a formula widely copied across Europe and North America. Over time they moved toward a more modern, accessible metal style while keeping a devoted global following. They remain one of Sweden's most internationally influential metal exports.
