Founded in Jakarta in 1973 by Achmad Albar, Donny Fattah, and Ian Antono, God Bless was the band that gave Indonesia its first credible rock catalogue. They opened for Deep Purple on the 1975 Jakarta tour, weathered three decades of lineup changes around Albar's signature wail, and wrote anthems like Rumah Kita and Semut Hitam that still soundtrack Indonesian patriotic events. Every Indonesian rock band that came after them, from Slank to Dewa 19, names them as forerunners.
