Farid al-Atrash was a singer, composer, and virtuoso oud player who became one of the defining stars of Egyptian cinema and music. Of Syrian Druze origin, he built his career in Cairo and blended classical tarab with a flair for melody that earned him the title King of the Oud. He starred in dozens of musical films that spread his songs across the Arab world. His romantic ballads remain classics of the golden age.
