Douk Saga invented coupé-décalé with the Jet Set crew in Paris nightclubs around 2002, at the height of the Ivorian political crisis. The music paired Congolese-influenced grooves with a performance of spectacular spending, and Sagacité became its founding record. He carried it back to Abidjan, where it took over the city's nightlife within months. He died in 2006, aged thirty-two, with the genre he named already the dominant sound of the country.
