Charlie Parker, known as Bird, created bebop in the 1940s with Dizzy Gillespie and changed the harmonic language of jazz. His alto saxophone lines moved at blistering speed through complex chord changes, and his recordings remain the study material of every jazz musician. He died at 34, and the graffiti Bird Lives appeared across New York.
