Carabao, formed in Manila in 1976 by Thai students Yuenyong Opakul (Add) and Kirati Promsaka Na Sakolnakorn, became Thailand's biggest rock band of the 1980s and the act that took phleng phuea chiwit from the protest underground to the stadium. Their 1984 album Made in Thailand sold more than five million copies, then a national record, and the title track remains a karaoke and football-terrace standard. Add Carabao went on to found the Carabao Dang energy-drink empire, sponsor Reading FC, and put a Carabao Cup on the Premier League trophy cabinet, but the band still tours every Thai labour day.
