Bobby Valentín, known as El Rey del Bajo, was a bassist, arranger, and bandleader who was one of the architects of the Fania sound. A member of the Fania All-Stars, he shaped the era's arrangements before building his own powerhouse orchestra from his base in Puerto Rico. His muscular, brass-heavy salsa and his patriotic anthem Soy Boricua made him a foundational figure of the classic salsa period.
