Alfred Apaka

1919–1960

Über Alfred Apaka

Golden-voiced baritone who became the defining Hawaiian entertainer of the postwar era. His warm, operatic delivery of hapa-haole standards made him a star at the Waikiki hotels and on national American television in the 1950s. Groomed as the voice of Hawaiian tourism, he recorded lush versions of 'The Hawaiian Wedding Song' and other island classics. His sudden death in 1960 cut short a career that had made him the islands' most famous voice.
