Alèmayèhu Eshèté was the Ethiopian Elvis, a charismatic rock and soul singer who brought swagger and pompadour cool to the Addis Ababa clubs of the 1960s and 70s. Recording prolifically for the Amha Records label, he fused James Brown funk and rock and roll energy with Amharic melody. The Éthiopiques series and later touring introduced his electric stage presence to audiences worldwide before his death in 2021.
